When we get backlogged, the phone operator will be responsible for making prank calls and tying up the line so more orders don't come in.

TL;DR

We* deliver* tacos* by drone*

The Short version:

  • We: Whoever shows up and is comfortable with a drone
  • Deliver: you call, ask for tacos, and we fly a drone to your location-ish. nothing is autonomous, this is old-school hand-flown droneage
  • Tacos: We have taco ingredients. they usually resemble tacos, unless they fall out of the sky
  • Drone: We typically deliver by quad-copter, though we have delivered by quadruped and by foot.

The Long Version:

This is all for fun - we’re just playing a game. We don’t charge for tacos. This is not a business. None of us are employees. We’re not even volunteers. We’re all players in a game. This is important when it comes to making sure we’re following the right regulations in a few particular areas.

Do you want to play Taco Drone (cook, fly, etc?) or do you want to be a Judge (eat tacos and compliment/complain about the performance)?

Taco Drone Judges (aka Just send me tacos already!)

We’ll be playing Taco Drone from 11AM to 2PM on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. While supplies last. No purchase necessary.

  1. Stop by the taco drone camp to hear about how to get tacos delivered
  2. You’ll need a delivery pad. Get one at the taco drone camp.
  3. Request some tacos. Let us know what you want, and where the delivery pad is located.
  4. Follow the guidelines when tacos arrive. Stand back. Don’t touch the taco basket, rope, or drone.
  5. When the drone has left, retrieve the Tacos. Eat them.
  6. Compliment/complain/shitpost/tweet/toot/share/write a letter about your experience. Was your order delivered timely? Was it delivered at all? Did you even get tacos?

How to Play

Here’s a spreadsheet for signing up for a time slot.

  • Taco Chefs need to know the food safety basics
  • Taco Drones need to have a current TRUST certificate
  • There are plenty of other roles too!

Taco Chefs and Food Safety

We are preparing and serving food to our friends and family, not the general public. We are not a licensed dining establishment. No money is changing hands. Even if we were, we would have 14 days to get our food worker’s cards.

That said - food safety is nothing to joke about. If you want to play taco chef, you need to know the rules, and the washington food worker card guidelines are an excellent baseline.

RTFM before playing chef. There will be a quiz.

Pilots and Drone Safety

We’re playing with drones to complete an obstacle course that involves dropping payloads at various locations.

We are not flying for a business, a commercial enterprise, or non-profit work. Part 135 rules on package delivery by drone do not apply to us. We deliver a couple tacos at a time - definitely less than 55lbs. This means we can operate within the rules for Recreational Flyers.

Both of our taco drones are already registered with the FAA and equipped with Remote ID.

If you want to play drone pilot, you MUST complete a TRUST exam. Make sure you save the certificate at the end!

Phone Operator Safety

Wired telephones can be dangerous. Do not chew on the wires. Beware of scam and prank calls. Do not bring the wired telephone in the bathtub. We don’t have a fancy online certification, so if you want to play phone operator, you may be at risk.

When we get backlogged, the phone operator will be responsible for making prank calls and tying up the line so more orders don't come in.

Customer Support Safety

We aim to have the best customer support in camp. Thank goodness the bar is low. We'll need someone on site to answer questions about how to order taco delivery.

How to Win

If you win Taco Drone in 2026, you get to run Taco Drone at Toorcamp 2028.
