We’re proud to serve TOORCAMP’S households with the future of banking. Each TOORCAMP attendee will be issued one (1) Shadybucks wristband, which can be associated with an existing Shadybucks card, or a new card obtained at the Shadytel Customer Experience Centre. Wristbands must also be activated at the Shadytel Customer Experience Centre. Shadybucks are brought to you by Shadytel and Beerocracy.

Due to popular demand, SHADYBUCKS will be returning in 2026! Hang on to your cards, because you never know what kind of shenanigans they'll enable...

Using Shadybucks
You can transact (spend/accept) in shadybucks so long as you have a browser - login at bucks.shady.tel, head to https://bucks.shady.tel/app/transact

To accept physical Shadybucks cards with a magstripe, you need a magstripe reader. Enter the magstripe in the "card present magstripe" field in the transaction page.

To accept wristbands, you need to sideload the Toorcamp Extras app. Unfortunately, for policy reasons, it is not available in app stores. This means there is no iOS app because each person would need to compile it themselves. Maybe next time! (If you work for Google or Apple, let's get in touch!)

If you’re a village/theme camp:
Accept ShadyBucks at your camp! We’re also looking for more villages to set up Global Entry access. Global Entry is a red carpet (any kind, just needs to be red) that lets attendees skip to the front of the line.

If you’re a TOORCAMP attendee:
Earn and Spend ShadyBucks! Shadybucks will literally pay you to answer the phone. Earn access to more perks like the LOUDner program and GLOBAL ENTRY. The ShadyBucks app makes it super easy! You can also earn ShadyBucks by providing a useful service.

If you’re vending in the NIGHTMRKT: Sell items or accept bribes in ShadyBucks. Bring better shit, get moar bucks.

FAQs from 2024
Why did we have to get a physical card to activate our wristbands?

Because we didn't have code working at the time to do anything else. The intention was to support virtual accounts, but we were just glad to get everything working.

Why did we need to get our wristbands activated?

TBH, that came together very late, even though we had initial discussions about it about a year ago. We got Toorcamp the wristbands fairly late but didn't want to trouble them with pre-programming or activation at registration. We also had a CTF challenge on the wristbands that could have been trivially solvable if we didn't pre-program them or program them in person.

Why did we need to go to Beerocracy to get our cards ker-chunked?

If you asked nicely, you didn't. But the embossing will hopefully be useful in the future. And it made our lives easier when we encoded the magstripe with your name because it was already printed on it.

Also, it seemed like Beerocracy was processing these very quickly, so it didn't seem like an unreasonable step.

Why did you have to manually activate the plastic cards?

Because there was a miscommunication last time about what would be encoded on the magstripe, and it was hella insecure. This process made it harder to forge cards.

Why was the app for Android only?

It was very unclear if we would get our Apple Developer Account approved in time, and even if we did, even more unclear if they would approve the app. Without being able to distribute in the App Store, everyone would have needed to manually rebuilt the app themselves. This was very dis-motiviating.

We also didn't receive an iPhone intended for development until the first official day of camp, and there was no way to test NFC functionality without a real phone 🙃

Why wasn't the app in the Google Play Store?

Because Google is as much of a PITA as Apple these days. An app approval that used to take hours is now more like a week. They also require the ability to test all app functionality, and it's unclear how that would work with wristbands, and attempts to ask them about that are not fruitful. They also have some vague questions about processing "financial transactions" and it wasn't clear we could get them to understand what Shadybucks was.

Why did you need an app for the wristbands?

Because there are no web APIs for NFC that are more than simple NDEF. Safari also rarely supports new web APIs, presumably to nudge people into writing native apps and falling under their terms.

Chrome on desktop devices may allow Isolated Web Apps access to USB card readers later this year, but that isn't supported at the moment

Accept ShadyBucks at your camp! We’re also looking for more villages to set up Global Entry access. Global Entry is a red carpet (any kind, just needs to be red) that lets attendees skip to the front of the line.
Earn and Spend ShadyBucks! Shadybucks will literally pay you to answer the phone. Earn access to more perks like the LOUDner program and GLOBAL ENTRY. The ShadyBucks app makes it super easy! You can also earn ShadyBucks by providing a useful service.

If you want to accept Shadybucks this year, I would recommend bringing an Android device. They should be running Android 6+ and have NFC. (Shadytel might have some to loan out.) There may also be an iOS app but Apple has only just approved the Shadytel Developer Account.
Magstripes and account numbers still continue to work as they did in 2022.

Here are a handful of questions that we've been asked in the past. If you have any questions that this doesn't answer, please email [mailto:info@toorcamp.org info@toorcamp.org]. We have also created a Google Group and Discord Chat for discussing planning, general questions about the camp, and announcements.

Where?
Where exactly is the camp?

ToorCamp is located at Doe Bay Resort & Spa in Orcas Island, WA.

What airport should I fly into?

Please see the Travel page

That's far from the airport I'm flying into, how am I supposed to get there?

We're suggesting for people to rent large vehicles and carpool. To look for people to carpool with, we recommend posting to the ToorCamp Google Group. If anyone wants to rent a larger vehicle and provide transportation for people coming out, please let us know and we'll advertise it on the website.

What?
What is the area like out there?

Check out the Site Photos. The area has lots of trees, rocky cliffs, and beaches. The camping area has been leveled a bit and there aren't as many trees near the beach. The area is very temperate and gets very little rainfall in June, but will probably get fog and could get minor drizzle in the early mornings. Expect the weather to vary between 50-75 degrees and around 3mph wind.

How?
What should we bring?

You should bring everything that you would normally bring when you go camping. Here's an example checklist:
* Water (all Doe Bay water is potable)
* Food
* Tent
* Sleeping Bag
* Camping Mattress
* Lantern (preferably non-burning)
* Flashlights (headlights are best) (red headlights are even better)
* Sunscreen
* Bugspray
* Warm clothing (it'll get down to 50 degrees outdoors at night)
* Cash

You may also want to bring stuff that you normally wouldn't take camping:
* A laptop
* Plain Old Telephone, fax machine, modem, BBS, etc. (Please bring your own cord--about 25 feet or more)
* Your Shadybucks card from 2022
* An RTL-SDR dongle to receive Shadyvision
* Ham/FRS/GMRS radios

Can I bring an RV?

There is a limited number of drive-in campsites that are large enough to park a small RV or camper (maximum 25 feet long). If you are bringing an RV you will need to purchase an RV parking ticket. A limited number of RVs will be allowed to park on-site.

Can I book a cabin?

Most cabins with a toilet and shower go to groups over 10. It's mainly to make sure we maintain a good butt to potty ratio to minimize the impact on public restrooms and spaces. So a lot of the cabins are reserved for our staff, sponsors, and villages. For everyone else with large groups or villages of 10+ people, email [mailto:cabins@toorcon.org cabins@toorcon.org] to request a cabin. Cabins and yurts are limited so deluxe cabins with running water are reserved leaving only the rustic ones with no plumbing. We'll try our best to accommodate any special needs.

Will I be able to park on-site?

Because of the number of attendees this year, everyone will need to park in our off-site parking lot down the street except for a few rare exceptions. We will allow you to drop off your gear on-site when you arrive, then you'll need to proceed immediately to the off-site parking lot. We will have a shuttle running regularly between the off-site parking and Registration.

Are camps/people expected to pack out their own trash or will there be dumpsters with scheduled pickup provided where trash can be dumped?

We would greatly appreciate it if people would pack out their own trash. (Yes, we're talking to you Camp Craigslist -- please don't dump multiple couches in the dumpster on your way out of town this time :-)

Who?
I'm press and I'd like to cover the event, do you offer any press passes?

Please email [mailto:david@toorcon.org david@toorcon.org] for press registration information.

I'm giving a talk, does this mean I get in for free?

Because of the costs of running the conference, we aren't providing free admission to people who speak or run workshops unless they are traveling overseas or are students. We are trying to help some people running workshops, however, since they require a major time investment with prep, setup, equipment, and running them over the weekend so we are providing free admission to people who run workshops. Either way, if you are speaking, doing a workshop, or organizing any other sort of event and need financial help, we are more than happy to work with you. Please email [mailto:david@toorcon.org david@toorcon.org] to discuss how we can help.

I'm under 18, am I allowed to come?

There are quite a bit of activities for teens and young adults. We don't have a problem with minors coming to the camp as long as they are escorted by a parent or authorized guardian. Also, children 12 years old and younger are allowed in free!

Can I bring my dog?

Please see Dogs. ToorCamp loves dogs, but there are a limited number of dogs allowed and we have some rules and regulations. Most importantly, please register your dog by emailing [mailto:david@toorcon.org david@toorcon.org] to ensure they can come. Registering your dog does not guarantee they will be allowed to come.

Why?
Why is ToorCamp so expensive?!

It actually isn't. Most security conferences cost much more, especially for a 5 day conference, and most people also end up paying for expensive hotels while staying at conferences which ends up usually costing much more than the conference admission and/or flight. We are cheaper than most of the other camping events out there let-alone 5 day computer security conferences.

What is included in the ticket cost?

The ticket gets you:
* Camping space
* Utilities (Power, Internet, Toilets, Water refill, etc)
* Access to all Talks & Workshops
* Access to special performances & nighttime events

Note that it does not include any travel, parking, food, beverage, lodging, equipment, etc.

Is there going to be just a weekend ticket?

Because the event is limited to only 600 tickets this year, we will not be providing weekend tickets.

Sponsors
We want to give you a bunch of money to have our name on stuff.

Perfect, we don't mind taking your money. Please email [mailto:sponsor@toorcon.org sponsor@toorcon.org] to discuss our different sponsorship options.

Liability
What if I get injured at the camp?

We will be providing on-site EMT staff as well as a Fire Marshal and will have proper evacuation plans in place. If you come to the camp, we will do all we can do to make sure you have the safest time possible, but please don't come after us if something happens to you. We would like to continue throwing these events in the future so please take responsibility for your own actions while at ToorCamp.

Getting to the Region
ToorCamp is located at Doe Bay Resort on Orcas Island, WA. The closest major airports to the Anacortes Ferry Terminal are the new Everett / Paine Field Airport (PAE) (~1 hour away, with flights from California, Arizona, and Las Vegas), Bellingham International Airport (BLI) (~1 hour away), Seattle/Tacoma International Airport (SEA) (~2 hours away), and Vancouver International Airport (YVR) (~2+ hours by car and border crossing). From Anacortes, it can then take up to 90 minutes to get to Orcas Island on the ferry and then another 45-minute drive from the ferry terminal to Doe Bay Resort.

Getting to ToorCamp
Once in the region, there are a number of ways to get to ToorCamp. Here are a few options to get started, please add more as you come across them.

By Land
Most people will be arriving in a car. Make sure to make a Ferry Reservation ahead of time or you could be waiting multiple hours or days to get across.

TIP: Ferry reservations for June 26th open after March 9th. If you need a spot, 30% of the pool is released 2 weeks before the sailing date and another 30% 2 days before. They're released at 7am, so make sure to set an alarm (or script your botnet) and book immediately at 7am to guarantee a spot! This is what we all end up doing so prepare to do a lot of refreshing and make an account ahead of time.

Orca Shuttle rides between the ferry landing and multiple stops on the island including Doe Bay from 8AM until 11PM daily. For early-morning or later-evening pick-ups, there is taxi service on the island to take you to and from Doe Bay – (360)-376-TAXI. It is also possible to rent cars on the island, with free drop-off and pick-ups at the ferry dock if arranged in advance – Orcas Island Shuttle (360)-376-RIDE.

Reservations are required for the Shuttle Bus from Seattle/SEATAC to Anacortes via Bellair Charters and Airporter. They also pick up in Bellingham, though the route may need a connection to get from the I-5 corridor to the Anacortes Ferry Terminal.

NOTE: THE INFORMATION BELOW HAS NOT BEEN UPDATED AND MAY NOT BE CURRENT

From Lake Union, Kenmore Air offers daily scheduled seaplane flights from Lake Union in Downtown Seattle directly to the Rosario Resort which is a short drive away from the Doe Bay Resort. Call 800-543-9595
By Sea
There are some great water taxi options that will take you directly from Anacortes to Doe Bay's Otter Cove Beach and is definitely the coolest way to get to the camp. Contact Island Express or Paraclete to arrange for group transportation.

The Victoria Clipper travels from Seattle to San Juan Island daily during the summer time. From San Juan Island you can walk on to the inter island ferry to Orcas landing. You would then need to find transportation to Doe Bay once on Orcas Island. This trip involves coordinating schedules and planning. It would take at least a half day, but might be an enjoyable way to travel if you enjoy boat rides.

Doe Bay Resort has two private mooring buoys that require mooring fees to dock and would require using a small watercraft to get to the beach. Call their front desk at 360-376-2291 to inquire.

There are also other water taxi services that can be chartered for those wishing to park on the mainland and boat directly to the resort. If you are interested in this option, please post to the ToorCamp Google Group.

Transportation on Orcas Island
* A 5 person or $100 minimum is required for any shuttle run to or from the ferry
